English Language Arts 7

In this class, students will learn to fluently read grade level text, acquire and apply strategies to identify unknown words and construct meaning, analyze the roles of protagonists, antagonists, and the structure and elements of poetry, memoir, give frequent presentations, formulate research questions and write a research report using arguments and counterarguments, and apply pre-writing and editing skills.

There is one formal writing assignment each marking period that will encompass topics from previous journaling, grammar lessons, and vocabulary. We will also address units on memoir, short stories, and informational text. While students will have ongoing opportunities to read novels independently during reader’s workshop, they will also be asked to read two novels together as a class—Where the Red Fern Grows and The Westing Game.
